Lankan Navy arrests 8 more Tamil fishermen

Lankan Navy’s atrocities against Tamil fishermen appear to be a never-ending horror story. Within a fortnight of attacking and killing a Tamil fisherman and grievously injuring another, the Lankan Navy struck off the Neduntheevu coast yesterday and arrested 8 Tamil fishermen accusing them of crossing maritime boundaries.

All the fishermen were in a single boat and were intercepted by Lankan Navy personnel when they were fishing near Neduntheevu. The Lankan Navy also confiscated their expensive fishing boat. After arresting the fishermen, it took them to the Kankesanthurai Naval Base and lodged them in prison.

Number of Tamil fishermen arrested by Lankan Navy rises to 18 in recent days. The arrest has occurred despite Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s recent assurance in Parliament that this won’t occur in future.

Coming as it does within a fortnight of the brutal killing of a Tamil fisherman, the latest spell of arrest has shocked and angered the relatives and friends of these fishermen who can’t stop wondering what role does the Coast Guard and the might of the Indian Navy has in protecting their interests.
