France migrants: Huge fire guts Grande-Synthe Dunkirk camp.

A camp housing 1,500 migrants in northern France has been destroyed in a fire that officials said began during a fight between Afghans and Kurds.

At least 10 people were injured when the fire tore through closely-packed huts at the Grande-Synthe camp, near the port of Dunkirk.
Last month officials said the camp would be dismantled because of unrest.

The French north coast has been a magnet for migrants trying to reach Britain.

"There is nothing left but a heap of ashes," said Michel Lalande, prefect of France's Nord region.

"It will be impossible to put the huts back where they were before," he added.

The population of the Grande-Synthe camp has grown since last October's destruction of the "Jungle" camp near Calais, about 40 km (25 miles) away.

The arrival of more Afghans increased tensions with Kurds living in the camp, AFP news agency reports, citing witnesses and officials.

The migrants have been evacuated and will be sent to emergency accommodation, with two gymnasiums nearby already made available, Mr Lalande said.

Blast rocks mainly Kurdish city of Diyarbakir in Turkey.

A large explosion has struck a police headquarters in the mainly Kurdish city of Diyarbakir in south-eastern Turkey.

Reports speak of at least four people injured. The city is at the heart of the conflict between the Turkish government and Kurdish separatists.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said the blast happened while vehicles were being repaired. The cause is not clear.

He said one person was trapped under rubble, another was seriously injured, and others had minor injuries.

The banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) is active in the area.
Turkey is five days away from a key referendum on granting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sweeping new powers.

South-eastern Turkey has seen frequent clashes between the PKK and Turkish security forces since a fragile truce collapsed in the summer of 2015.

There have also been bloody attacks in Turkey blamed on so-called Islamic State (IS). The jihadists are hostile to both the Turkish state and the Kurdish rebels, who are battling for territory and influence inside Syria.

San Bernardino shooting: 8 year old boy and two adults dead at California primary school.

Two adults and a child have been killed in a shooting in a classroom of a primary school in San Bernardino, California, police say.

The suspect shot and killed his estranged wife, a teacher, and wounded two children who were behind her, one of whom died of his wounds.
He then turned the gun on himself, police said.

Police chief Jarrod Burguan described the incident as a suspected "murder-suicide" attempt.

The shooting happened at 10:30 local time (17:30 GMT) at North Park Elementary School in San Bernardino county, 60 miles (96km) east of Los Angeles.

The gunman, named as 53-year-old Cedric Anderson, had gained entry to the school as a visitor and kept his weapon concealed until he opened fire in the classroom where 15 children with special needs were being taught, authorities said.

He killed his wife Karen Elaine Smith and fatally wounded eight-year-old Jonathan Martinez, who was airlifted to hospital but later died.

A nine-year-old pupil remains in hospital in a stable condition, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Mr Burguan tweeted shortly after the incident that the suspect was "down" and there was "no further threat". The school was immediately evacuated.

Up to 600 students were transferred by bus to nearby Cajon High School, where they were later met by their parents.

"Police operations are continuing to secure the area," Mr Burguan said earlier on Twitter, adding: "However, we do believe the threat is down."

Sweden silence for truck attack victims.

Swedes observed a minute of silence across the country on Monday for the victims of last week's truck attack by a Uzbek man whom police believe was a jihadist sympathiser.

A huge crowd gathered solemnly outside the Ahlens department store at the corner of the Drottninggatan pedestrian street, where a stolen beer truck ploughed down shoppers before slamming into the store's facade, killing four people and injuring 15.

Media reports said the suspect had confessed, claiming he had been ordered by the Islamic State group to carry out the attack against "infidels".

Under grey and rainy skies, the crowd observed a minute of silence at noon (10:00 GMT), many visibly moved with tears streaming down their cheeks as a sea of flowers and candles covered the ground.

"I just want to cry, many died here. For nothing," said Fadi Mdalal, from Syria, who was among those at the scene.

The four dead were two Swedes, one of them an 11-year-old girl, a British man, and a Belgian woman.

Many people thanked and hugged police officers guarding the scene, some offering them flowers, for their widely-praised response to the attack.

At the same time, an official ceremony was held outside Stockholm's City Hall, attended by Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, King Carl XVI Gustaf and most of the royal family, and Stockholm mayor Karin Wanngard.

"We will never give in to violence. We will never let terror prevail," Wanngard said. "Stockholm will remain an open and tolerant city."

To the families of the victims, Lofven said: "You are not alone, we are thinking of you. All of Sweden stands with you."

Russian arrested in Spain 'over mass hacking'.

Spanish police have arrested a Russian programmer following US allegations of large-scale hacking.

Pyotr Levashov was held in Barcelona on Friday and is remanded in custody.

Spanish police said Mr Levashov controlled a botnet called Kelihos, hacking information and installing malicious software in hundreds of thousands of computers.

The arrest was part of a "complex inquiry carried out in collaboration with the FBI", police said.

Mr Levashov is subject to a US international arrest warrant and a Spanish court will hear whether he can be extradited.

Much of his alleged activity involved ransomware - blocking a computer's access to certain information and demanding a ransom for its release.

Mr Levashov's wife Maria told Russian broadcaster RT that the arrest had been made in connection with allegations that Russians had hacked the US presidential election.

She said Spanish police had told her the arrest was in connection with "a virus which appears to have been created by my husband and is linked to [Donald] Trump's victory".

However, Agence France-Presse news agency quoted a source close to the matter in Washington as saying that Mr Levashov's detention was "not tied to anything involving allegations of Russian interference with the US election".

A US intelligence report released in January alleged that Vladimir Putin had tried to help Mr Trump to victory, allegations strongly denied the Russian president.

Mr Trump later commented that the outcome of the election had not been affected.

Several cybersecurity experts, including Brian Krebs, have also linked Mr Levashov to a Russian spam kingpin, who uses the alias Peter Severa.

San Bernardino shooting: Two dead at California primary school.

Two people have been killed in a shooting in a classroom of a primary school in San Bernardino, California, police have confirmed.

The victims, a woman and the suspect, were both adults, police Lt Mike Madden said. Two students were also in a critical condition, he added.
Police chief Jarrod Burguan described the incident as a suspected "murder-suicide" attempt.

The shooting happened at 10:30 local time (17:30 GMT).
Mr Burguan tweeted shortly after the incident was reported that the suspect was "down" and there was "no further threat". The school was immediately evacuated.

The shooting took place in a classroom of North Park Elementary School in San Bernardino county, 60 miles (96km) east of Los Angeles.

Students were quickly transferred to nearby Cajon High School, where they were later met by their parents.

"Police operations are continuing to secure the area," Mr Burguan said earlier on Twitter, adding: "However, we do believe the threat is down."

Stalin demands CBI inquiry against CM and his Ministers.

DMK’s working president M.K. Stalin has demanded a thorough CBI inquiry against chief-minister Edapadi Palanichamy and seven other Ministers whose name has figured in the list of persons chosen by the party (read: Dinakaran) to distribute cash to voters in R.K. Nagar to get votes.

Election Commission cancelled the R.K. Nagar by-polls last night, sending a strong message across that it won’t turn a blind eye to the cash-for-vote practice indulged in by leading political parties. Last weekend’s raids at State Health Minister Vijayabhaskar’s premises resulted in unearthing of documents/cash and the above-said list which turned the scales in favour of cancellation of the R.K. Nagar by-polls.

Campaigning in R.K. Nagar yesterday evening (when it wasn’t known that the by-polls would be cancelled) in support of DMK candidate Marudhu Ganesh, Stalin demanded a thorough and a detailed inquiry by CBI into the roles of the chief-minister and his ministers in distributing cash to voters to influence them and get their votes.

“IT raids are not enough; the chief-ministers and other Ministers including senior Minister Sengottaiyan would have to be arrested and brought under the CBI net. Edapadi Palanichamy also has the moral responsibility to tender his resignation to save the honour of the high office that he holds now that his name has figured in the above-said list,” Stalin told the people.

More Ministers, MLAs to come under IT Department’s scanner.

Following the income-tax Department’s raids at State Health Minister Vijayabhaskar’s premises in Chennai (which led to the recovery of some incriminating documents and ultimately resulted in the cancellation of the R.K. Nagar by-poll), more Ministers and MLAs belonging to the ruling faction of the jailbird Sasikala-led AIADMK are likely to be covered under the Department’s list of persons who would face raids in future.

The seizure of documents from Vijayabhaskar’s premises, including a detailed list of money allocated to top Ministers (including chief-minister Edapadi Palanichamy) to be distributed to voters in R.K. Nagar to get votes, has shocked the top-rung leadership pf the ruling faction of the AIADMK which appears to be a rudderless ship at the moment as Dinakaran is after poll victory and Sasikala is cooling her heels in a Bangalore jail.

Based on the evidence collected during the above-said raids, EC’s special officer Vikram Batra filed a report with the Chief Election Commissioner last evening after which the Commission decided to cancel the R.K. Nagar by-polls.

In the meantime, it is said that 12 more Ministers and a few MLAs are also under the income-tax Department’s scanner which plans to conduct raids at their premises in Chennai and elsewhere. Tension and panic has thus gripped the party leaders
