Deepa, niece of the deceased Tamil Nadu chief-minister J. Jayalalithaa, addressed her first-ever public meeting yesterday in her attempt to make a mark in the State’s politics by winning the R.K. Nagar by-polls to be held in the city on 12th April.
‘Boat’ is Deepa’s symbol for her ‘MGR-Amma-Deepa Peravai’ (MADP). She issued a poll manifesto (something which is not done for by-polls) on Monday listing out the welfare measures she had proposed to be carried out in R.K. Nagar if she is chosen over the factions of AIADMK, the DMK, the DMDK, the BJP and the CPI-M candidates.
Speaking in typical ‘Jayalalithaa’ style, Deepa spoke emotionally. “I’m akin to your daughter though I’m nor born to you. I stand here today only for your sake. I want to be one among you and want to continue to work for your welfare till I breathe my last. No force on earth can separate me from you (people),” she said.
Taking a dig at ‘jailbird’ Ssikala for reportedly and purposely not taking good care of her Aunt, she said that she would ‘unmask’ the so-called good image of betrayers if she is voted and sent to the Assembly. “I won’t rest till justice is meted out and the gang of betrayers is booked and sent to prison,” she promised the voters during her speech which lasted for not more than five minutes.
